Casa Vicens, the first house built by Gaudí in Barcelona
This modernist building located in Barcelona, in the district of Gracia, was Gaudí’s first major project after his degree as an architect in 1878. It was built between 1883 and 1888, when Gracia District was still an independent urban area of Barcelona.
It is interesting to highlight the facade of the building, whose decoration is based on compositions with tiles, giving the building a very colorful aspect, one of the main characteristics of this construction and modernism.
Casa Vicens is structured on four levels: an underground floor where the museum shop is actually located, two floors that were intended for housing and an attic for service use. In total, the building’s area consists of 698 m2
In the inside, the polychrome wooden beams ceilings are decorated with floral papier mâché themes; the walls have sgraffiato cladding of vegetal motifs. In the main hall there are paintings by Josep Torrescassana. The floor is of Roman mosaic deopus tessellatum. Gaudí has also designed the furniture for the house.
The external walls are masonry alternated with rows of tiles that reproduce some yellow flowers found in the area.
The house is topped with chimneys and towers in the form of small temples.
The majolica tiles that cover external and internal areas of Casa Vicens have served as inspiration to generate a collection of gift objects in which we wanted to reflect this modernist work. Our Barceloning production is for sale at La Capell, the store in the basement of Casa Vicens. After the new museum project for the building, the basement has recovered its original structure formed by Catalan vaults, which were hidden in past by different dividing walls and decorative elements that made it difficult to glimpse the entire space. Now it has become a fluid space where you can find exclusive products for Casa Vicens and the best design in Barcelona.
